Changes to make Hibberson Street in the Gungahlin Town Centre more people-friendly and easier to get around will be funded in the 2016/17 ACT Budget.

Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris confirmed today that $300,000 would be invested to design a new pedestrian priority zone for the growing town centre in today’s Budget.

“I’m excited to announce that we will be getting more feet on Hibberson Street to make it more people-friendly. Hibberson Street is the heart of the bustling Gungahlin Town Centre that has seen significant private and ACT Government investment in recent years. These changes will make it an even better place to visit, shop and meet up with friends and family,” said Minister Fitzharris.

“Last year I ran a survey asking people to have their say on the future of Hibberson Street. More than 700 people responded, with the majority wanting to see change on the busy shopping strip.

“Seventy-four per cent of respondents think Hibberson Street should be permanently closed to traffic, or be a pedestrian-first area. Only 10 per cent wanted to see it left as it is.

“I have been looking at a range of options for Hibberson Street since becoming Minister for Transport and Municipal Services, and I’m pleased this $300,000 in funding will allow us to develop a design that fits in with the other changes in the area, including the new bus station and light rail terminus.

“Consideration will also be given to the best way to improve Hibberson Street from a pedestrian, cyclist and business perspective, with the objective of creating an active and attractive environment. Consultation on the design of Hibberson Street will commence in the next 4-6 weeks.”
