Construction update the Gungahlin to the City light rail corridor. Here’s the latest on what’s happening over the next week.

Utilities relocation

As an important part of the preparatory stages of construction, work relocating and installing utilities moves forward along the corridor. In Gungahlin, crews will work this week to install a long drainage pipe between Kate Crace Street and Manning Clarke Crescent. Open trench work between Mapleton Avenue and Gungaderra Creek will continue, as well as laying of communication conduits towards Nullarbor Avenue.

At Sandford Street intersection in Mitchell, Canberra Metro are laying communication conduits and will commence stormwater pipe works which will continue into March. Work will start on the relay of communication cables between Sandford Street and EPIC.

At the end of the corridor, underboring continues at the Macarthur and Wakefield Avenue intersection in preparation for the laying of communication conduits and construction of a large communications pit.

Ground works

In Mitchell, crews will continue road widening works this week between Well Station Drive and the Mitchell Resource Centre. From here, crews will relocate barriers down to Lysaght Street to facilitate the start of earthworks and foundation treatment between here and Sandford Street.

Light rail depot

At the light rail vehicle depot, crews will finish up excavation works and implement testing of footings in preparation for upcoming foundation works and the laying of concrete slabs for administration, control centre and maintenance facilities.

Tree removal program

The removal of trees along the Northbourne Avenue median as part of the tree removal program will continue to allow crews to safely get in and start work around future light rail stations, future mid-block crossings and to provide clear sight lines for safety around the construction zone. Recent damage sustained from storms and the deteriorating health of remaining trees led to the decision to remove all the trees by the end of March. Safety is the number one priority of the project, and that’s why it is necessary that we carry out the final phase of tree removals from the Northbourne Avenue median over the next six weeks.

Out of hours work

Out of hours activities this week include:

  • Various locations along Flemington Road between Well Station Drive and Randwick Road throughout the week
  • Antill and Mouat intersection, works started Sunday 12 February and will finish Friday 24 February
  • Barry Drive and Cooyong Street intersection, works started Sunday 19 February and will finish Friday 24 February.

All out of hours work will be undertaken between 8pm to 6am from Sundays to Thursdays, with no work on Friday and Saturday nights. It is important to note that all out of hours work is subject to change of date depending on weather conditions and the nature of construction. We would like to thank all Canberrans in advance for their patience while we continue to deliver the first stage of Canberra’s light rail network.

Transport integration

In other news, we are excited to see Cord Civil crews heading into the final stages of enabling civil construction works on the Dickson bus interchange that is to run alongside the light rail corridor. When complete, this bus interchange will support better transport integration in Canberra’s north, acting as a meeting point for bus, active travel, taxi and light rail transport. Works are being undertaken in Canberra Metro’s delivery area to facilitate completion of the facility.
