Nearly a third of Gungahlin residents now all share a vibrant online space, with local group My Gungahlin recently notching up a major milestone of 20,000 followers.
First established in 2011, My Gungahlin is an online community designed specifically for the growing region. The website and accompanying Facebook page feature news, articles of interest, and information about local businesses, schools, sporting events and community groups.
Not only is it an arena that local residents turn to for insight into their area, the Facebook page also offers a vibrant space for community members to engage and interact. And since it first launched nearly eight years ago the page has seen consistent growth in followers.
In March, the My Gungahlin Facebook following surpassed 20,000. With the region featuring a total population of 71,142 people, that means nearly one in every three residents follows My Gungahlin on Facebook.
My Gungahlin founder and operator Mark Scarborough explained the site and Facebook page were all about fostering the interests of the growing Gungahlin community.
“Our aim was to offer a seminal space where local residents could establish a sense of community and seek out information and services specific to this region.
“We wanted this to be a place that supported local businesses, where the community could see themselves reflected in the news and articles, but also where they could engage with each other about the issues that matter to them.”
And Mr Scarborough noted he was humbled by the overwhelmingly positive response from the community he seeks to support.
“We often get great feedback about the important role My Gungahlin plays in keeping residents abreast of issues unique to this area.”
With no sign of interest slowing down, Mr Scarborough said he looked forward to continuing to serve the region and fostering the community spirit of Gungahlin.
“I can still remember when we reached 1000 Facebook followers in December 2012 which at the time was a major milestone. We are grateful for our loyal followers who have been with us for many years and we welcome all the new followers that have joined us recently.
“It’s a privilege to continue to share the joys and the challenges of one of Australia’s fastest growing regions.”
