Domestic Animal Services will dedicate two days this month to microchipping cats and dogs, offering a discount of more than 50% off the normal price for ACT residents.
“It is a requirement in Canberra for any dog or cat over the age of 12 weeks old to be microchipped,” Registrar of Domestic Animal Services, Peter Dinan said.
“Our shelter, which is usually closed on Wednesdays, will open its doors and offer $15 microchipping on Wednesday 12 and 19 June to encourage residents to microchip their pets.
“To take advantage of the discounted service, register your interest by Monday 10 June to [email protected]. Pets should be brought to the Mugga Lane Shelter for microchipping between 11am and 3pm on the designated days.
“Microchipping is an effective way for animal shelters and vets to identify lost dogs and cats for quick return to their owners.
“It is a simple and painless procedure where a tiny silicon chip, approximately the size of a small grain of rice, is implanted under the skin of the animal. The procedure takes less than a minute and, once inserted, the chip cannot be lost.
“It has been compulsory to microchip all cats and dogs since 1 May 2011, following changes to the Domestic Animals Act in 2008,” Mr Dinan said.
The penalty for not microchipping a dog or cat is a $75 infringement notice.
Domestic Animal Services’ Shelter is located on Mugga Lane in Symonston.
