The New Year will again start with a bang, with the ACT Government reinstating the midnight fireworks display over Lake Burley Griffin.

Last year, the late-night pyrotechnics was scrapped in favour of a bigger bang at the family-friendly hour of 9 pm, with the show lasting 15 minutes.

Then Assistant Minister for Economic Development Tara Cheyne said at the time that previous attendance numbers demonstrated that the community “strongly favours the earlier showtime” as it is more suitable for families.

But this year, the traditional format resumes with a 9 pm display and one as the clock strikes midnight.

Fireworks will launch from the Central Basin and Commonwealth Bridge, ensuring maximum visibility across four celebration hubs at Rond Terrace, Queen Elizabeth Terrace and two hubs at Regatta Point, with one closest to Commonwealth Avenue and the other at Nerang Pool.

Each hub will feature local DJs, food and beverages and amenities.

The fireworks will be visible from vantage points across the city, including Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve, Red Hill Nature Reserve, and the surrounding suburbs of Barton, Campbell, Civic, Kingston, Reid, Russell and Yarralumla.

Canberra’s Mix 106.3 will broadcast the fireworks soundtrack live this year at both 9 pm and midnight.

Canberrans can tune in to experience the fireworks in sync with the music, whether you’re at one of the lakeside hubs or enjoying the view elsewhere.

The free event starts at 6 pm, and Canberrans can bring a picnic or buy food and drink from vendors onsite.

The city can party into the wee hours with restaurants and entertainment venues able to open late, with extended trading hours in place under special event legislation.

Venues will be able to automatically extend their trading hours and sell liquor in open containers at the premises past their usual licensing times.

They must adhere to any other conditions on the licence during the extended period and have an obligation under the act to serve alcohol responsibly.

Revellers can leave the car at home with free public transport available until the last service. Those who do drive are reminded to park safely and legally.

The summer holiday public transport timetable will be released soon to provide more detail.
