Icon Water is asking our community to make the call to Dial Before You Dig on 1100 before planning construction works, to avoid damaging essential water and sewerage assets around their house.

We also need assistance from our community to keep a one metre clearance to water and sewerage assets, such as manholes and water meters, this will help our crews respond quicker to network issues.

There is over 6,400km of water and sewerage pipes in Canberra, which is greater than the distance from Tuggeranong to Tahiti. Assets like water and sewerage pipes can be between 60cm to 200 metres below the ground. It is important that our community understand their responsibility to avoid damaging these assets, especially when doing backyard work and construction.

Icon Water Manager Customer and Community Affairs, Lisa Quinn, said “when it comes to your water and sewerage services, what’s outside your house matters.”

“Dial Before You Dig will let you know where underground pipes are on your block.”

“Damaging water or sewerage pipes can be dangerous, expensive, and cause a disruption of service for you and your neighbours”

“When you’re planning on doing any building or digging around your home you should contact Dial Before You Dig on 1100 before you start.”

“Our crews always work as safely and quickly as possible to restore services during network issues, so it is important that assets such as water meters or manholes, remain clear from things like rubbish, plants or unapproved structures.”

“Keeping litter, shrubs, hedges and rocks clear of critical assets such as water meters and manholes, allows our staff access to maintain these essential services.”

“We appreciate our community respecting our assets and staff to ensure that we continue to provide the highest quality water and sewerage services to the ACT.”
