GCC Calls for More Office Blocks in Gungahlin – It is Our Turn Now!

Gungahlin desperately needs more office accommodation to provide extra employment opportunities to stimulate commerce in the Town Centre. The Gungahlin Community Council notes recent comments about ageing office accommodation for Commonwealth public servants in Woden and Tuggeranong and believes that new offices should be built in Gungahlin to house at least some of those workers.

An ACT Government office block is currently under construction and will inject about 600 new workers into the community. The GCC recently formed a position on Light Rail and considers that the Capital Metro project would be enhanced by a solid employment base in the Gungahlin Town Centre by significantly increasing the two-way journeys at each end of the working day.

President, Ewan Brown stated that the Council wants to see fewer reasons for local residents to leave the district for employment, recreation and services.

He said that another office block was essential to provide the critical daily population mass required for a thriving town centre. A Commonwealth government department presence in Gungahlin would be the catalyst for encouraging faster development to take place in the region.

Given the state of declining suitability of a number of premises in Canberra housing both ACT and Commonwealth public servants the GCC believes that the time is indeed right to consider relocation to Gungahlin.

The GCC remains concerned that the region lacks local elected representatives at both ACT and Federal level.
