The ACT Government has provided further details of the two new schools to be established in north Gungahlin to better cater to the needs of families moving into the region’s newest suburbs.
Member for Molonglo and Gungahlin, Meegan Fitzharris, discussed the new schools with Minister for Education and Training Joy Burch at today’s Budget Estimates hearing.
“It was very good to hear Minister Burch provide further details of the new P-6 (preschool to year 6) school to be built in the new north Gungahlin suburb of Taylor by 2019.
“It was revealed today by Minister Burch that the school will have three streams and cater for approximately 540 students when fully established,” said Ms Fitzharris.
“Given what Minister Burch and ETD officials detailed today I am confident the new primary school in Taylor will meet the demand from the community.”
The new school will provide a quality learning environment to meet the educational needs of students in the suburbs of Moncrieff, Jacka and Taylor. Specifically this school will be suitable for over 80 preschoolers and approximately 450 primary schoolers from K-6.
Construction of a new high school was also confirmed by the Minister, and a study has been funded to look at the timing and location of the school.
Ms Fitzharris said Gungahlin families welcomed the ACT Government’s commitment to establish two new schools in north Gungahlin.
“I know Gungahlin families are excited that a new primary school and a new high school will be built to better meet the needs of students in our region.
“As one of Australia’s fastest growing regions, we need to make sure services keep pace. These two new schools, as confirmed today, will go a long way to meeting the needs of our community.
“Investment in education is so important, and along with the NBN we are also seeing more investment in ICT services in our schools which is helping students prepare for a digital future.
“I thank Minister Burch and the ACT Government for its ongoing commitment to providing high quality services, including schools, to the residents of Gungahlin” Ms Fitzharris said.
