If you don’t already have a MyWay card now is a good time to get one to take advantage of the new Transport Canberra network and light rail. MyWay is the smartcard ticketing system for convenient, easy travel. Fares are discounted when passengers tap on and off at the start and end of their journey.
Public transport users will be able to transfer between light rail and buses using a MyWay card or paper ticket.
In Gungahlin you can purchase your MyWay card from the following Recharge agents:
- Gungahlin Newsagency, Marketplace Gungahlin
- Gungahlin Post Office, Gungahlin Village
Or from Access Canberra Service Centre located at Winyu House, 125 Gungahlin Place.
When you purchase and use a MyWay card, you are agreeing to the conditions.
When using your MyWay card, tap on at the beginning of your journey and then again when completing, and if you are transferring between bus to rail remember to always tap on and off between vehicles.
Alternatively a single use ticket can be bought, which is valid for 90 minutes, and used across both light rail and buses.
MyWay smartcard technology enables a money value and/or travel entitlements to be stored on the card. It’s a reusable card that remains valid for two years from the date of the last transaction.
Using MyWay on Transport Canberra services
MyWay cards must be tapped on and tapped off the MyWay card readers when travelling.
MyWay card readers are located at the front and rear entry passage of Transport Canberra buses.
If you are travelling on the light rail you are required to tap on the ticket validator located at each light rail platform prior to boarding and to tap off the ticket validator when alighting, prior to leaving the light rail platform.
Failure to tap off after a trip will result in a default fare being applied. The MyWay system will automatically tap you off when you next board a Transport Canberra service, which is known as a ‘synthetic tap off’.
If the reader is not working on a bus service please notify the driver. If the ticket validator is not working on a light rail platform look for an alternate validator on the platform or call 131710 to advise of your failure to tap off.
Lights on the card reader
Green = tap on success.
Green + Yellow = tap on success and card balance is below $10.
Yellow = tap on successful, however as a result of failing to or being unable to tap off on your previous trip, a default fare has been applied.
Red = card is either not valid, has expired, an error has occurred reading the card, or there is an insufficient balance.
If you have tapped on to a bus and change your mind before it leaves the bus stop, please note the time, location and bus number before phoning 13 17 10 or completing an online enquiry to request reimbursement of the fare. If you have tapped on to a ticket validator on a light rail platform and change your mind, simply tap off your MyWay card at the validator.
Viewing your transaction balance
To view the transaction or your MyWay card balance when you enter or exit the bus, hold your MyWay card over the MyWay card reader as long as is required to view the on-screen display. Similarly you can view you MyWay card balance at the ticket validators on the light rail platforms.
You can top up your MyWay card and check your balance at the Ticket Vending Machines located at major bus stations and light rail platforms. Link to TVM information
You can also check your balance online if your MyWay is registered.
Remember, tapping off at the end of your journey ensures the cheapest fare is applied.
Taking care of your MyWay
Your MyWay is valuable, so should be looked after.
- Register your MyWay to protect the balance in the event it is lost, stolen or damaged.
- If your MyWay is lost or stolen, phone 13 17 10.
- Do not bend or puncture the card as this may damage the internal antenna or microchip.
- Do not expose the card to heat.
- Keep it separate from other cards such as credit cards and building access cards.
Using another MyWay card
MyWay cards can be used by anyone, but only one person can use a card at a time. If two or more people are travelling together, each person must have a separate MyWay card or pay a cash fare. Remember, applicable concessions must be carried at all times.
