Construction will continue in the new year at the Barton Highway intersection following the traffic lights being switched on this week.

The third lane on the Barton Highway southbound approach over the bridge will be completed in early January 2017 and the William Slim Drive approach will be completed in February 2017. Some delays on these approaches are expected until these works are complete.

“The introduction of traffic lights to an intersection with a roundabout configuration is new to the ACT and may take some getting used to so please take care on your approach to the intersection,” said Ben McHugh, Director of Capital Works, Transport Canberra and City Services.

“Some further works are being completed to reinforce the lane arrangements including additional signage and line marking.

“Motorists should be aware that the traffic lights may direct them to stop as they travel through the intersection. Drivers are encouraged to select the correct lane on approach to the intersection and to use the three lanes within the roundabout to ensure it operates efficiently.

“We are monitoring the signals to ensure the phasing and timings are optimised including having a senior traffic manager on site in the morning peak period. Movements through the intersection will continue to improve as these changes are made.

“We would like to thank the community for their patience as the final stages of this project are completed.”
