The ACT Government is reminding Canberrans and visitors to the region to stay safe when swimming in the Territory’s many superb waterways this summer.
“With summer now here, more people are making use of the many great spots along the Murrumbidgee River Corridor for a swim, including Uriarra Crossing, Casuarina Sands, Kambah Pool, the Tharwa Sandwash, Pine Island and Cotter Bend,” Regional Manager, National Parks and Catchments, Brett McNamara, said.
“These are great places to take family and friends for a refreshing dip on a hot Canberra day and we encourage people to make use of these sites, but it is important to remember the risks of being in and around water.
“Signage has been installed along the banks of many popular waterways to help people understand and prepare for the risks associated with swimming in rivers in the ACT.
“People should not be afraid of the water, but they should be aware of a few simple precautions they should take to stay safe. Never dive into water if you are unsure of the depth and keep an eye out for submerged logs, other hazards and wildlife.
“It is also important to watch the flow of the water. Flowing water is stronger than you think. Never let children out of your sight and avoid swimming alone. Finally, never drink alcohol and swim.
“Take note of any water safety signage. The signage is there to help you make informed decisions and to keep you from getting into a dangerous situation.”
