Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, has launched the Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary’s Spring into Nature snap-film-draw competition which will run between Sunday 22 September and Friday 25 October 2013.
“The Spring into Nature competition is an excellent way for Canberra children to explore and capture the diversity of the wildlife at Mulligans Flat so close to home,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“The Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary is located right on the doorstep of the Canberra suburbs of Forde and Bonner in Gungahlin.
The competition, created by the Friends of Mulligans Flat (the Friends), encourages children aged between 5 and 15 to enter their own photo, video or drawing that captures the nature at Mulligans Flat from their perspective.
“The Sanctuary offers an abundance of wildlife and views to inspire the kids, like the gum trees, grassy glades, birds, kangaroos and other plants and animals in the area.
“Competition entrants have the chance to win a $100 bankmecu MySaver bank account which will be awarded to the winner of each of the three categories. The runners-up will win a one year subscription to the CSIRO Scientific and the Helix magazines.
“Photo and drawing entries from the competition will be used to develop an exhibition which will be displayed at the Gungahlin library for the first few weeks. The exhibition will then move to its permanent home at the Mulligans Flat woolshed where the photos, drawings and videos will be available for public viewing.
“Photos and drawings entered into the competition will be rotated in the woolshed’s exhibition space on a monthly basis, so that each child has a chance to have their work displayed.
“Entries will also be used by the Friends to generate ideas about future learning activities and engagement with the local community.
“This is a great opportunity for families to enjoy the woodland landscapes and wildlife at the Sanctuary,” Mr Rattenbury said.
