Canberrans will soon have access to more ‘Water on Tap’ in public places, with work commencing to install the first of six new water refill stations.

“Since 2014, the ACT Government has progressively installed 30 ‘Water on Tap’ refill stations in parks and public places across Canberra in an effort to reduce the use of disposable bottles and increase fresh, tap water consumption,” Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said.

“The water stations have proved popular and in coming weeks six new water stations will be installed at the Gungahlin Town Centre, Civic Square, Margaret Timpson Park, Manuka Oval, Cook shops and Kambah shops on Mannheim Street.

“The water stations are equipped with two bottle refill nozzles as well as a drinking fountain. They are wheelchair accessible and can easily be located in crowded areas. The water station at Manuka Oval has been custom designed to accommodate large crowds and includes multiple bottle refill nozzles and bubblers.”

The ACT Government is taking the lead to make environmental and healthy lifestyle choices easier for the community.

“Water should be the clear drink of choice in the ACT, and by encouraging people to carry reusable bottles that can be filled up with fresh tap water, instead of purchasing sugary drinks, we can work towards healthy weight outcomes while also reducing waste to landfill.”

Minister Fitzharris also invited the community to have their say on the location of any future water refill stations by completing a short survey. People can provide feedback online at timetotalk.act.gov.au or at their local public library. The consultation closes 4 May 2016.

The water refill stations are part of the ACT Labor-Greens Parliamentary Agreement. Portable units are also available for hire from ACT Health at no cost for use at events. Contact 6269 1000 during business hours to arrange bookings.
