Handmade Canberra believes in supporting our community in many ways. This extends to our support of charities and not for profit organisations that are working to improve the quality of life for members of our community.
In the last few years we have supported, amongst others, Bosom Buddies ACT, Dragons Abreast ACT, Motor Neuron Disease, The Yellow Van, The Red Cross QBN, Menslink, Sids and Kids, 2015 Pink Pedal Challenge, Canberra Cat Fix, Painting with Parkinsons and Karinya House and Vinnies.
ANGLICARE DOOR CHARITY
At each of our markets (held 4 times a year) we have a charity assigned as greeters at the entrances to the event. We encourage customers who attend the markets to make a gold coin donation to the door greeters as they enter the markets. The charity can also distribute information about its cause, and educate people about the issues that it is focused on. For the June market, this door charity is Anglicare, whose Winter Appeal is aimed at helping families in crisis over the Winter season.
VINNIES BLANKET DRIVE
During the June Market, Handmade will also be hosting Vinnies Australia at a stall that will be collecting donations for the annual blanket drive. The St Vincent de Paul Society is committed to actively and passionately speaking out against the causes of poverty and inequality. The Canberra Night Patrol is staffed by about 280 volunteers, serving up to 1000 homeless and at-risk people a month with light refreshments, and donating clothing and hygiene packs, along with blankets, jackets, beanies and scarves during the bitter Canberra Winter. They provide a snack and a listening ear. Their blanket drive seeks to collect warm items for Canberra’s homeless, but also to raise awareness.
Handmade’s shoppers are being asked to bring along warm items of clothing, blankets and sleeping bags, along with hygiene packs (tooth brush, paste, soaps, deodorants etc.)
HAMPER PRIZE DRAW
Each donation will receive an entry into the Handmade Hamper giveaway worth $300 and the more people donate, the more chance they have of winning this amazing prize.
Last year’s blanket drive provided enough warm items to supply Vinnies with several weeks’ worth of supplies. Says Handmade Canberra’s Creative Director: “we could have wrapped the Telstra tower in the donations we received for Vinnies at the June market last year! Blankets, coats, sleeping bags and other warm items went directly to the people who needed it most at this time of year, and people were also generous with toiletries and sanitary items to help Canberra’s homeless through the Winter. We want to do even better in 2017 and are encouraging people to put aside 10 minutes this weekend to go through their wardrobes and linen cupboards, to find anything that is unused or doesn’t fit and give generously.”
The market is on June 10 & 11 at Exhibition Park in Canberra 10am – 4pm Saturday and Sunday. Parking & entry to the market is free.
