Gungahlin’s cinema is one step closer today after the announcement that Hoyts will be the preferred operator, local MLA Meegan Fitzharris said.
“I’m very pleased to see progress being made for Gungahlin’s first cinema, which will be built on the corner of Hibberson Street and Hinder Street.
“The location will be right on the light rail line, offering great access and an opportunity to make Canberra’s northern town centre an even better place to shop and be entertained.
“I was proud to lead calls for a cinema to be built in Gungahlin in 2012, and to see real progress being made is great news for our community, which is growing fast.
“I know this will be welcome news for people living in Gungahlin who are eager to see more entertainment options in the town centre, especially the young people in our region.
“In the meantime we’re holding a movie marathon in Gungahlin from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 June 2016 at Gungahlin College featuring a program that will include movies across a range of genres and classifications to be announced in May, said Ms Fitzharris.”
A representative of the developer announced at last night’s Gungahlin Community Council that they will seek to lodge a development application in mid-2016, with construction to commence in early 2017.
“I would encourage anyone interested in the cinema, and the future of our town centre, to take a look at what is being proposed and to have their say during the planning process,” said Ms Fitzharris.
