It may be best to avoid Northbourne Avenue if possible in the coming months when the gateway to Canberra is reduced to one lane at some times and closed altogether at others as a program of roadworks takes place.

Cycle lanes will also be closed during the works.

The project will start next Monday (24 May) and improve the road’s condition and reduce the need for regular maintenance, providing a smoother ride for motorists and cyclists.

Two sections of Northbourne Avenue will be affected: northbound between Greenway Street and Macarthur Avenue for about two months, and southbound between Antill Street and Wakefield Avenue for four nights.

Most of the longer works will be done between 5:00 am and 3:00 pm Monday to Friday and 7:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays, but some may be done at night towards completion to minimise construction times and impacts to motorists.

Transport Canberra and City Services is warning motorists that delays are expected, a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place for the duration of these works, and that drivers should seek an alternative route where possible.

The rehabilitation work will commence on the northbound lanes of Northbourne Avenue between Greenway Street and Macarthur Avenue, including the removal of the existing road pavement, repairs to kerbing and stormwater drains, placement of new road pavement and line marking.

It will start from the inside lane closest to the light rail corridor, and only one lane of traffic will be open between 5:00 am and 3:00 pm.

In addition, Greenway Street will be closed in both directions between Northbourne Avenue and Forbes Street for the duration of construction, with only construction vehicles allowed.

These arrangements are expected to be in place for about two months, with all works expected to be completed in July, weather permitting.

In June, resurfacing works, including asphalt patching of cracks, will be undertaken on the southbound lanes of Northbourne Avenue between Antill Street and Wakefield Avenue.

They will be done over four nights, with the road closed between 7:00 pm and 5:00 am.

The on-road cycling lanes in both directions are also being upgraded and will be closed for the duration of the project.

Cyclists can either stay on the road or use the off-road footpath.

During the works, traffic controllers will be in charge of all pedestrian crossings, and pedestrians and cyclists should follow their instructions and signs when crossing Northbourne Avenue.

Light rail services will not be affected, but if there are temporary disruptions to bus routes, signs will be placed at the bus stops, and updates will be available at www.transport.act.gov.au.

These works are jointly funded by the Australian and ACT Governments.
