The blossoms of Floriade bring life and joy to the Canberra community, announcing the start of spring and the rebirth of nature around the ACT.
Sadly, the current COVID-19 lockdown means Floriade has once again been reimagined so the goal this year is to bring a little piece of the festival of flowers to each suburb in Canberra. And for the second year in a row, Icon Water is keeping the tulips blooming by watering garden beds across the community.
“We know how important Floriade is to the community,” said Icon Water managing director Ray Hezkial. “It’s always a highlight for locals and is a signal that spring has arrived in Canberra.
“While the event will be a little different again this year, we’re looking forward to what ‘Floriade: Reimagined’ can bring to the community. As Canberra’s water utility, we are only too happy to be involved in providing water to community groups to ensure that flowers bloom right across our beautiful city.”
The hard-working staff at Floriade have taken the portable displays of more than 400 planter boxes containing more than 60,000 blooms, that were originally bound for Commonwealth Park, and distributed them across Canberra.
These plants will join the 300,000 bulbs and annuals that have been spread throughout the region.
Icon Water has volunteered to pay for the cost of water as well as organising the watering of Floriade’s displays.

To manage the enormous workload of watering more than 300,000 bulbs and annuals planted around Canberra, Icon Water has partnered with local landscapers The Outdoor People to water the displays with recycled water to keep them looking vibrant.
“As the ACT’s water and wastewater service provider, we have a vision to be a valued partner in the community,” said Mr Hezkial. “Our support of Floriade is just one example of this.
“We also think our customers should have the opportunity to share their values and priorities with us. That’s why we’ve launched our new community engagement program, Let’s Talk Water and Wastewater.”
The program is the start of continuous dialogue between Icon Water and local residents. As part of the initiative, Canberrans can have their say about the future of the region’s water and wastewater services.
The intent is to have meaningful conversations that translate into tangible outcomes for the community. Through the community’s input, Icon Water hopes to find the best ways to invest in the liveability and sustainability of the Canberra region.
