ACT Policing, in partnership with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA), will be showing its support for White Ribbon Day through a joint ‘Men in Uniform’ campaign this Saturday (November 23).
Chief Police Officer for the ACT Rudi Lammers — a White Ribbon Day Ambassador — said that supporting the efforts of the White Ribbon Foundation through the Men in Uniform partnership is an important community engagement, delivering a clear message that police will not tolerate family violence, and the community should not either.
“Stand up, speak out, and break the cycle of family violence – that’s our message to the community this White Ribbon Day,” Assistant Commissioner Lammers said.
“As the first responders to family violence incidents, we see first-hand the effects of violence against women on families. But this is not just a police problem, it’s a whole-of-community problem.
“While it’s encouraging to note that reports about family violence incidents to police have increased by 11 per cent compared to the 2011-12 financial year, we want to encourage more people to pick up the phone and call police up if they know someone who might be suffering.
“Victims might not always be able to make that important call for help, so we are often reliant on members of the community to play their part, step in to help and by doing so, deliver the unequivocal message that abusive and violent behaviour is unacceptable and it’s a crime.”
White Ribbon Day provides an opportunity for ACT Policing to partner with ADF and ESA in raising to funds for the White Ribbon Day foundation, increase awareness of family violence, and continue sending the message out to the community.
“We are asking the community to attend one of our stalls this Saturday, donate to the White Ribbon Foundation and undertake an oath to eliminate violence against women,” CPO Lammers said.
The Men in Uniform stalls will be located at the Gungahlin Marketplace. Stalls will be staffed by members of ACT Policing, AFP recruits, the ADF and ESA from 10am to 2pm.
Last year’s Men in Uniform stalls raised more than $30 000 for the cause.
