A team of Gungahlin locals is set to take on Australia’s most grueling fun run in the name of a serious cause, raising funds for paediatric brain cancer research as they put themselves to the test in the Sydney City2Surf next month.
On August 12, Jarrett Anthoney, Mark Scarborough, Nicole Scarborough and Chanel Bernal will compete in the epic event, raising funds in honour of Jarrett’s sister Dainere Anthoney.
Dainere bravely fought a four-year battle against brain cancer but succumbed to it in 2013. During her journey she touched the Australian community by tirelessly raising awareness about a disease which remains the number one killer of children aged under 14.
Jarrett explains he first ran the race shortly after his sister passed away, honouring a commitment he had made to her in the weeks prior to her death.
“Dainere and I planned that I could raise awareness and funds for paediatric brain tumour research through running in the City2Surf and having a fundraising page,” Jarrett reflects.
“I have done this for the past six City2Surf runs and will continue to each year so we can get ever closer to finding a cure for this insidious disease.”
This year Jarrett will be joined by his largest team to date, with Gungahlin local Mark Scarborough again taking part, along with new team members Nicole Scarborough and Chanel Bernal, who are looking forward to the challenge and are busily raising funds.
Ms Scarborough explained this would be her first year participating in the iconic event but with two children of her own the cause had touched her deeply.
“I can’t imagine the pain of losing a child to a brain tumour. I hope to raise much-needed funds to continue research into better treatments and hopefully even a cure.”
Meanwhile, Chanel Bernal took part last year, but has now seized the opportunity to contribute to a deserving cause.
Together the group of four make up “Team Dainere’s Rainbow” and are well on their way to raising $7500 to assist with paediatric brain cancer research.
All proceeds will go to the Dainere’s Rainbow Brain Tumour Research Fund in conjunction with the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation, which relentlessly seeks better outcomes for children diagnosed with brain cancer.
Their ground-breaking research includes investigating the biology and genetics of childhood brain tumours, identifying agents that have an anti-tumour effect, and working towards treatment strategies and state-of-the-art clinical trials.
“What still amazes me every single year about the run, is the incredible and unique atmosphere the City2Surf has,” Mr Anthoney said.
“It really is like no other fun run I’ve ever raced in. Even when running up Heartbreak Hill, no matter how tired you feel, the crowds support you and compel you to push through any struggles to get through the finish line.
“This atmosphere, combined with the significance of Dainere and I planning for me to compete in it, makes the City2Surf the fun run I do every year to raise awareness and funds in memory of my little sister, Dainere.”
