On Thursday 16 November 2017, ACT Policing will be participating in Operation Safe Speeds.
Operation Safe Speeds, a national operation, will run for 24 hours and see police target speed on our roads.
The idea for the inaugural operation was established following a National Road Policing Conference this year and is supported by all state and territory police agencies.
Speed is an issue nationally and, for the purpose of the operation, is broken down into three areas of focus: excessive speeding, low level speeding and inappropriate speeding (where a driver travels at a speed that is inappropriate for the conditions).
ACT Policing will be conducting targeted operations to enforce the speed limit. Drivers caught speeding face fines ranging from $257 and one demerit point, to $1,831 and six demerit points.
Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said stopping speeding on our roads is a priority for ACT Policing.
“Speeding is one of the top contributing factors to death and serious injury on ACT Roads.”
“If you speed you are putting yourself and all other road users at risk.”
“Obey the road rules and drive to the conditions so we can all work towards safer roads both in the ACT and nationally.”
Operation Safe Speeds runs from 12:01am to 11:59pm Thursday 16 November 2017.
Throughout each state and territory all available police will be out and about to detect and prosecute drivers found speeding.
