Canberrans are encouraged to register for the annual Garage Sale Trail to reuse household items that might otherwise end up in landfill.
“For sellers it’s a free, fun and social way to de-clutter, find a new home for your pre-loved items, meet local people and make some pocket money,” ACT NOWaste Senior Manager, Business Strategy and Support, Petra Crowe said. “The event will be held on the weekend of 21 October and 22 October, 2017.
“For shoppers, it’s a great way to grab a bargain, find something unique and shop sustainably, preventing items ending up in landfill. You can register online now to host a garage sale and bargain hunters can plan their trail using the map online.”
Now in its seventh year, the Garage Sale Trail is the biggest community reuse event in Australia. In 2016, 320,000 shoppers and sellers participated in over 15,000 garage sales. Anyone can get involved and it is free to register. Sellers can sell on one or both days of the Garage Sale Trail.
Reducing waste is a priority for the ACT Government and the Garage Sale Trail is a fun and social way to encourage residents to reuse.
ACTNOWaste also reminded the community to consider responsible ways to dispose of unwanted goods rather than throwing them in the bin.
“You can donate to the charity GIVIT or drop items to The Green Shed for reuse, but remember to donate responsibly and don’t leave items outside charities or charity bins, Ms Crowe said.
More information on the charity GIVIT can be found at www.givit.org.au.
