Last month we published a post Casey Community Recreational Irrigated Park – Development Application where we outlined what we thought was a Development Application to build a new recreational park in Casey. We were wrong…
This was not a Development Application to build the recreation park rather providing drawings and information purely for conceptual purposes only, to demonstrate a CRIP will work within the site area. Once this DA is approved the land will be handed back to the Government and will be subject of a future Development Application. The area where this proposed park is Section 124, Block 1 located between Yeend Avenue, Plimsoll Drive and David Miller Cresent.
As part of Casey 2 Estate the developer, Lend Lease Communities was required to provide sufficient land for the future development of:
- Originally a Neighbourhood Oval. An ACT Government driven decision was then made to change the requirements to a Community Irrigated Park (CRIP) with a “kick about”.
- A toilet block facility;
- A sealed carpark containing 30 car parking spaces;
- A serviced site area of 1,000m2 suitable for a Community Activity Centre; and
- A local neighbourhood playground.
The below image does demonstrate this is feasible.
Signage was placed on this block in a number of locations advising of the Development Application. There was also a letterbox drop to surrounding homes to advise of the Development Application. Through this process I believe that it was not clear that this was not a Development Application to undertake works on the site but rather a concept plan. As such we did publish an article that suggested that was the case.
I did write to the ACT Government on the 17th January asking a few clarifying questions however when we did not receive a response and there was discussions starting on social media about the Development Application we published our article. I received a response on the 8th February (after the DA had closed) advising the true situation. Speaking to others about this they had formed the same conclusion as us that this was a Development Application to build the park as per the image above.
It is our understanding this land will be handed over to Sports and Recreation once the Development Application has been approved and the developer has met all their obligations.
This proposed park was being used as a benefit to Casey when land was being sold in Springbank Rise so there will be families within the area expecting this to go ahead. We are calling on Minister Berry as the Minister for Sports and Recreation to fund this park in the next budget so it can be constructed as per the concept plan and as many residents are expecting. This park will provide a fantastic space encouraging children and families to be active and promote a healthier lifestyle. It also provides opportunities for older children to be more active which is lacking in the area. This block has been sitting undeveloped for several years now and needs attention to stop becoming an eyesore in the suburb. We do not want to see it continue in this state for years!
If you would like to see this development go ahead we strongly recommend you write to Minister Berry letting her know as well as the other five local Yerrabi MLA’s.
