A new temporary car park at the heart of Gungahlin Town Centre will help ease parking pressures as major development projects get underway in the area, Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said today.
“The new temporary car park on the corner of Anthony Rolfe Avenue and Hinder Street will provide an additional 181 parking spaces in a growing part of our city,” Minister Fitzharris said.
“All the parking spaces are free with no time restrictions and they will provide staff who work in the town centre, as well as other visitors, alternative parking opportunities.
“This will be particularly important when construction commences on sites including the new cinema, which is currently being used for parking, and the first stage of light rail.
“The ACT Government sees parking as an important element in the growth and vitality of Canberra. As with public transport and active travel, it keeps Canberra moving and helps the movement of people to workplaces and commercial activities.”
Minister Fitzharris said works are also being undertaken to improve access to and from the temporary car park, including a path upgrade and planned safety improvements at the Anthony Rolfe Avenue and Hinder Street intersection.
“The paths will provide connections to Kate Crace Street and Boon Lane to ensure people can easily access the car park from the town centre. These works are expected to be completed by the end of July,” Minister Fitzharris said.
“Safety improvements are also planned for the Anthony Rolfe Avenue and Hinder Street intersection. These will include the replacement of the give way signs on the approaches to this intersection with stop signs and installation of a speed cushion at the approach and median location of each of the side roads (Mawby and Hinder Streets).
“These safety improvements are expected to be implemented by September 2016 and aim to help reduce crashes at this intersection.”
