As part of the ACT Government’s Pop-Up Cabinet event in Gungahlin today, Ministers toured the Gungahlin Community Health Centre, which has provided more than 26,000 occasions of service to the local community in the last 12 months.
The Pop-up Cabinet in Gungahlin is the third event following visits to Woden and Belconnen last year. The Pop-up Cabinets allow Canberrans to engage directly with ACT Government Ministers to discuss local issues. Then next one is in Tuggeranong on 2 and 3 March.
Assistant Health Minister Meegan Fitzharris said since opening in 2012, the health centre has consistently increased services offered to people and helped keep the community healthy.
“The ACT Government is committed to providing Canberrans and their families with quality health services in their local communities. Our health centres, which are located in all major town centres including Gungahlin, are a big part of this commitment,” Ms Fitzharris said.
“The figures released today demonstrate that the Gungahlin Community Health Centre has provided a real boost to the health services available in Canberra’s fastest growing region, and I know local residents will continue to take advantage of the services available to them.
“The Gungahlin Community Health Centre is a great hub where people can access a range of health services. Many of these services are aimed at assisting clients to better manage acute and chronic conditions in the community, closer to home, while reducing the reliance on our hospitals.
“I’d encourage anyone in need of health services to check out the Gungahlin Community Health Centre to see what it can offer, because it really is a one-stop-shop that focuses on the health needs of the Gungahlin community. Plus it’s in such a convenient location here in the Town Centre.
“The first years of the health centre have proven successful and I look forward to working with the community to find ways to improve the services offered through the community health network,” said Ms Fitzharris.
The Gungahlin Health Centre provides Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Nutrition, Maternal and Child Health, Youth Dental, Diabetes and Orthoptist services, Women’s Health Care services, Pathology, Wound Care and Mental Health Care and Alcohol and Drug services.
In September last year the Mental Health Service for People with Intellectual Disability (MHS-ID) program relocated to the Gungahlin Health Centre, expanding the mental health service offerings at the centre. MHS-ID is a specialist service that provides comprehensive assessment and treatment to people with an intellectual disability and a known or suspected mental illness or mental dysfunction.
Gungahlin Health Centre opened in September 2012 and is part of the ACT Government’s more than $900 million Health Infrastructure Program, which also involves the building of the new University of Canberra Public Hospital on the north side, and the $23 million expansion of the Canberra Hospital Emergency Department.
The Gungahlin Community Health Centre is located in the Gungahlin Town Centre, at the corner of Ernest Cavanagh Street and Fussell Lane.
