Minister for Sport and Recreation, Shane Rattenbury, has announced that applications are now open for the more than $2.7 million of funding available in the 2016 Sport and Recreation Grants Program and the Asset Repair and Maintenance Scheme.
“The ACT Government’s annual Sport and Recreation Grants Program supports community organisations to make improvements to programs and facilities available across all sports and recreation activities in the ACT community,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“Last year some recipients included Corroboree Little Athletics, who received $3,200 to purchase some new high jump mats, the Belconnen Dog Obedience Club, who received $3,600 to purchase a new equipment shed and Kung Fu Wushu ACT Inc who received $2,500 to develop new program offerings.
“The grants program also provides ongoing assistance to a number of clubs and organisations, from large sports such as netball, basketball and rugby, to smaller organisations like billiards, broomball and hang-gliding.
“As a Government we are committed to working with all facets of the sport and recreation sector to engage more people to become physically active.
“Last week I released Connecting and Building Recreation, which sets out Government’s vision for increased participation in and development of active recreation and play. I am particularly focused on working with stakeholders to develop innovative, less structured recreational activities, recognising that there are people in our community who are looking for ways to engage in physical activity outside of traditional sport.
“These grants are available to all sport and recreation organisations that might be in need of some financial assistance, whether that is for the development of a new program or some upgrades to facilities, I would encourage all organisations to apply.
“While we boast that we live in the active capital, there are still many Canberrans who are not involved in any sort of physical activity, and these grants are designed to support organisations to develop high quality programs and facilities to encourage that participation,” said Mr Rattenbury.
Applications must be submitted online and further details are available by contacting Sport and Recreation Services on 6207 2080 or at www.sport.act.gov.au/grants.
