Minister for Roads and Parking, Mick Gentleman, thanked over 400 residents of Gungahlin and the wider Canberra community who had their say on the delivery of upcoming Gungahlin road upgrade projects.
“The verdict is in from the Gungahlin community who have called for road upgrade projects in Gungahlin delivered at the same time. 73 per cent of respondents requested that Government get on with the work as soon as possible rather than stage projects over a longer period of time,” Minister Gentleman said.
“While delivering the works concurrently may add to traffic congestion during the construction phase it will allow people travelling to, from and through Gungahlin to reap the benefits of greater capacity roads and improved traffic flow sooner.
“Roads ACT reached out to as many members of the community as possible with the consultation featured at Gungahlin’s community festival, online, at local shopping & in local newsletters.
“We also asked the community for feedback on how they would like to be informed about upcoming road works. Electronic roadside signage was the favourite and was selected by 68 per cent of respondents. Letterbox drops, website information and notification through the ACT Government’s weekly email newsletter were the other preferred communication methods.
“Some other ways of receiving information such as an email register were also suggested and will be considered as part of future communications for the region’s key projects.
“Key projects which will be delivered to help build an integrated transport network in the region and relieve congestion once complete include the upgrade of the intersection of Gundaroo Drive/Barton Highway/ William Slim Drive. The roundabout will be upgraded to incorporate additional lanes and traffic signal control on all four of its approaches.
“A 1.6 kilometre southbound section of Gungahlin Drive from north of Sandford Street through to the Barton Highway will also be widened to three lanes.
“Minor works will also be undertaken at the intersection of Gundaroo Drive/Candlebark Close/Nudurr Drive to improve safety,” Minister Gentleman concluded.
