Over the past couple of months ago, Jessica aged 9 decided to sell her clothes that she had outgrown and toys she no longer needed through the My Gungahlin Buy Sell and Wanted group on Facebook (with her mother’s help of course). Jessica has three piggy banks: one for spending, one for savings and one to give to charity. Jessica decided that the Community Pantry at Communities@Work would be her charity as she wanted to support something in her local community.
With the help of Jessica’s mum, they went grocery shopping with the money she raised and personally delivered a shopping trolley with over 100 items of food, basic household items, and snacks for children school lunches. Jessica would like to keep helping the pantry and is very keen to talk to her school to see if they can do a fundraiser. Jessica can teach us all a big lesson on giving and that no matter what age you are you can always do something small that can make a big difference to someone in need.
The Community Pantry is part of Communities@Work’s Social Programs. Social Programs can be accessed from the Communities@Work’s Community Centres in Gungahlin and Tuggeranong. Communities@Work’s Social Programs support those most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the ACT. Everyone is welcome, and Communities@Work’s Social Programs offers assistance to people on low income. Anyone can walk in who is needing a bit of help without feeling judged. In addition, Communities@Work’s Social Programs helps with business and work attire for people who are attending interviews, new employment, court appearances or any ‘special’ occasion. They can also support with referrals and emotional support and can assist with food through the community pantry as well as emergency relief provisions. Communities@Work’s Social Programs run social inclusion programs like weekly walking groups and morning teas as well as workshops to help reduce power bills and improve your home, information sessions, and partnerships with other community and government organisations such as Care Inc and Legal Aid.
The Gungahlin Community pantry is opened Monday through to Friday 9am-3pm and is located at the back of Communities@Work Community Centre, 47 Ernest Cavanagh. If you would like to find out more about the Social Programs please contact 62936232.
You can donate non-perishable food and hygienic products at the pantry or using the collection point in front of Woolworths in The Marketplace.
