Parents of children heading to preschool for the first time will be helped by a new booklet launched today by ACT Minister for Education and Training Joy Burch.
Preschool Matters includes advice about local ACT preschool programs, curriculum requirements and support available for families.
While preschool is not mandatory, attendance is high in the ACT with 5,682 students currently enrolled in 83 preschools.
“Preschool is a really exciting time for children and their parents and carers,” Ms Burch said.
“The Preschool Matters booklet will help parents and carers to prepare for the beginning of their child’s formal education, by giving them important information in one easy guide.
“We recognise the important role parents and carers play as the first and most influential educators in their children’s lives. We need to work with parents to ensure our young people get the best start in life.
“The ACT Government has used funding under the National Partnership Agreement on Universal Access to Early Childhood Education to ensure every preschooler in Canberra has 15 hours of free preschool each week.
“Unfortunately, that agreement expires at the end of this year. Without that federal funding, we may have to cut hours back, which will affect every family with preschool-age children.”
