Noah and Amelia have taken the top spots for most popular baby names in the ACT for 2024.

While Amelia has been a regular at the top of the list, it’s Noah’s first time as the most popular name for boys.

Noah comes from the Hebrew word Noach, which means to rest.

It came in equal 7th on the list of boys’ names in 2023 and has been in the top 10 each year since 2017. It was the most popular name in NSW in 2022.

Queanbeyan couple Kristine Alves and Ash Cole named their recently Canberra-born son Noah.

“We chose Noah as it fit amazingly with his personality and fit so well with his middle name Ashley, after his dad,” Ms Alves said.

Oliver and Henry, which occupied the top two boys’ positions since 2021, placed second and third.

Both names were popular early last century but fell out of fashion until coming back into vogue the past few decades.

Riotact editor Claire Fenwicke said her son Henry, born in July 2024, would have been named Amelia if he were a girl.

“Our two older kids have more ‘traditional’ names, so we were looking for a name that would match and wasn’t a family name (like Thomas is). Henry fit the bill. And Amelia was our pick for a girl, so I guess we’re on trend this time round,” she said.

Amelia has been in the top 10 since 2011 and it’s the sixth time the name has been at number one. In 2023, Amelia shared the top spot with Charlotte (now number three, equal with Ava). It marks the first year Charlotte has not topped the popular name for girls since 2019. Isla moved up the list from number eight to number two.
