The new Marketplace represents another step closer to the realisation of the vision for the Gungahlin Town Centre as a lively hub for retail, commercial and entertainment uses while maintaining the unique “urban village” character. Gungahlin is the 3rd fastest growing region in Australia and this development responds to growing demands of the community. The project aims to meet the needs and expectations of customers by providing greater retail choice for convenience, fashion, dining and lifestyle needs.
The $60 million development has seen the expansion of The Marketplace and will feature a new two level, undercover car park for over 500 cars, plus an additional 6,900 sqm of retail space incorporating a 5,500 sqm new concept Kmart discount department store and 25 new specialty stores.
The Marketplace’s extensions will have many positive impacts on the Gungahlin Town Centre in the areas of employment, the variety of retail choice, less need to travel outside of Gungahlin for shopping needs and more convenience parking for everyday shopping.
The expansion of the centre will see improved connectivity between the Woolworths, Big W and planned Kmart precincts with a tunnel built under Hibberson Street that will link the two car parks, giving seamless access to over 1,300 car spaces. The new car park is due to open soon an Kmart and the specialty stores opening in November.
The redevelopment will provide increased employment opportunities during and after the construction process.
