On Saturday 13 December 2014 the ACT Government will go out for public tender for construction works to upgrade the intersection of William Slim Drive and Barton Highway, Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, announced today.
“In recognition of the growth along the Gungahlin to Belconnen corridor, road infrastructure improvements will be undertaken to improve the safety and traffic flow of the Barton Highway and through the William Slim Drive and Barton Highway roundabout,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“The roundabout will be upgraded to incorporate an additional lane and traffic signal control on all four of its approaches.
“The new intersection signals will be coordinated to control traffic flow through the roundabout, reacting to demand and time of day. For instance, traffic travelling from Gundaroo Drive (Gungahlin) towards William Slim Drive (Belconnen) in the morning peak will have greater priority than under current arrangements. Similarly, traffic heading north on the Barton Highway during the afternoon peak will have priority.
“Bus priority measures will be implemented on the Gundaroo Drive and William Slim Drive approaches to the roundabout, including dedicated bus lanes with a raised median island between them and the general traffic lanes.
“On-road cycle lanes will be introduced on all movements, excluding the Barton Highway southbound approach, which will have a new shared path bridge adjacent to the existing bridge.
“Construction is expected to commence in early 2015 and is anticipated to be completed in mid-2016,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.
