ACT Policing is advising motorists that 40km/h speed limits will be enforced in school zones for the start of the new school term on Monday (February 1).
Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations Station Sergeant Susan Ball said the restrictions are in place between 8am and 4pm and warns that motorists who chose to ignore them will face tough penalties.
“In 2015, ACT Policing caught 1,355 drivers speeding in school zones. Alarmingly, five of those were speeding more than 45km over the 40km limit and each incurred a $1811 fine and six demerit points.”
Station Sergeant Ball said that her team will be out in force targeting school zones.
“These speed limits are in place to ensure the safety of our children and we will continue to proactively target the 40km per hour school zones to make sure the message is getting through.”
ACT Policing will continue to focus on speeding during the months of February and April as part of its multi-agency safety strategy.
