ACT Policing will be targeting anti-social behaviour and underage drinking at Skyfire tomorrow night (Saturday, March 15), with parents urged to be aware of their children’s whereabouts at all time.
This year, as in previous years, ACT Policing will place particular focus on identifying anti-social behaviour.
“Our main priority is to ensure those attending the Skyfire celebrations will not be subjected to anti-social behaviour, especially the behaviour of young people under the influence of alcohol,” ACT Policing’s Operational Commander for the event, Superintendent Brett Kidner said.
“We’re asking people to be sensible, be responsible and look after each other. We don’t want what is meant to be an enjoyable family-friendly night spoilt by anti-social behaviour.”
Last year three teenagers were taken into custody for alcohol related offences (a 75 per cent reduction on 2012 figures).
The biggest issue for police was uniting lost children with their parents.
“Parents are encouraged to talk to their kids and find out where they will be and with whom, and what their plans are,” Superintendent Kidner said.
“For families attending Skyfire we suggest nominating a meeting point if you get separated. Stay at that meeting point until you are reunited with your family or find a police officer who can help you.”
“We also encourage parents to ensure young children have contact details on them such as a phone number, this will ensure lost children can be identified and parents contacted.”
“To assist in this process parents can pick up an identification wrist band at the Constable Kenny area on the Southside of the lake or from an ACT Policing member.”
Road closures will be in place to assist traffic flow and direction around Lake Burley Griffin. Event goers can follow the ACT Policing Traffic Twitter account @ACTPol_Traffic to get all the latest traffic information.
ACT Policing is urging people who are driving to the event to take their time, plan to arrive early and have patience when leaving the event.
Police would also remind motorists that random breath-testing will be conducted so we would urge those who will be driving to and from the event, not to drink and drive.
