ACT Policing is again preparing for the lights spectacular called Skyfire over the waters of Lake Burley Griffin this weekend (Saturday, March 14).
Underage drinking will continue to be a focus for ACT Policing at this event along with anti-social behaviour.
Operation Commander for the event, Acting Superintendent Jeff Knight said that police were generally pleased with the crowd behaviour at last year’s event however was concerned about the number of missing children.
“Last year approximately 30 children went missing from their parents/guardians. The introduction of identity wristbands to children by ACT Policing staff and officers helped facilitate the return of many,’ said Acting Superintendent Knight.
“We will be doing identity wristbands again this year however do encourage parents and guardians to nominate a meeting point in case you do get separated from one another,” he said.
“We also encourage parents to ensure young children have contact details on them such as a phone number, this will ensure lost children can be identified and parents contacted.”
Last year seven juveniles were taken into protective custody for alcohol-related issues and one adult male was taken into custody for intoxication.
Parents can pick up an identification wrist band at the Constable Kenny area on the Southside of the lake or from an ACT Policing member at the event.
ACT Policing will have members deployed on the north and south side of the lake as well as AFP Maritime on the lake.
Road closures will be in place to assist traffic flow and direction around Lake Burley Griffin. Event goers can follow the ACT Policing Traffic Twitter account @ACTPol_Traffic to get all the latest traffic information.
ACT Policing is urging people who are driving to the event to take their time, plan to arrive early and have patience when leaving the event. Random breath-testing will be conducted so we would urge those who will be driving to and from the event, not to drink and drive.
