A revolutionary approach to road resurfacing using recycled materials has won a sustainability award at the 2016 Master Builders and Cbus Excellence in Building Awards.

We reported in February on this trial to be undertaken on Kelleway Avenue, Nicholls in this article New clean, green road for Nicholls

I would like to congratulate Roads ACT and contractor Downer for winning the award for trialling a new low carbon asphalt mix,” Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said.

“The asphalt mix, which is made using recycled road pavement and printer toner, was trialled for the first time in Canberra on Kelleway Avenue in Nicholls in February this year.

“By using the new asphalt mix, 14 kilograms of carbon dioxide can be saved from being produced for every tonne of product used. This goes hand-in-hand with contributing to a better climate and environment and this has been acknowledged through this sustainability award.

“A second section of road in the city centre on Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street also received the greener product during routine road resurfacing works in June 2016. The trial of asphalt mix was laid across a busier section of road than the earlier test at Nicholls and there are plans to use it again in the near future across other Canberra roads.

“I am delighted the teams have been acknowledged for their innovative and sustainable work solutions. Roads ACT will continue to trial this product to evaluate the suitability for its use in different situations,” Minister Fitzharris said.
