A new style of government shopfront that will provide residents with better access to government services is coming to Gungahlin in early 2015, Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, announced today.
“A new Canberra Connect shopfront is planned to be built as part of the ACT Government’s office block in Gungahlin,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“The new shopfront will be located on the ground floor of the government office block and feature an open plan layout without barriers between staff and customers.
“The open plan layout will allow customers to easily interact with staff over low counters or desks promoting higher quality conversations and improved service delivery for complex needs..
“Due to this open-plan style delivery, the new Gungahlin shopfront will also operate under a new model in which payments can only be made by debit or credit card. As a result, transactions will be processed quicker and wait times will be reduced..
“This new operating model provides an opportunity to bring the ACT Government in line with service delivery trends towards open plan, cashless environments. The new model also looks to the future in terms of ways in which government services can best be delivered to the community.
“Transaction and service delivery trends have significantly changed since the last ACT Government shopfront was designed and built. National and local trends in citizens’ payment behaviour are showing very high usage and preference for electronic payment methods and an increasing trend away from the use of cash and cheque.
“The new shopfront will allow the ACT Government to explore the adoption of new technologies and enhance its digital service delivery.”.
Mr Rattenbury said all existing shopfronts will continue to take cash, cheque, debit and credit card payments.
Gungahlin residents can continue to use existing shopfronts or Australia Post outlets if they prefer to make payments in cash or cheque, including the nearby Australia Post at Gungahlin Town Centre.
As part of the review of a new operating model for Gungahlin’s shopfront a triple bottom line assessment, a social accessibility study and a cost-benefit study were completed. For more information on the new shopfront including these documents visit https://www.canberraconnect.act.gov.au/
