Today (Saturday 21 November), ACT Policing members will join members from the Australian Defence Force and ACT Emergency Services Agency to raise awareness in the Canberra community to end men’s violence against women and to raise money in support of White Ribbon Australia.
Acting Deputy Chief Police Officer Rob Wilson is encouraging the Canberra community to get behind the cause.
“Sadly four precious lives were lost in Canberra this year to family violence. Nobody deserves to be a victim of family violence and we need to band together as a community to put a stop to these devastating behaviours”
“We are asking Canberrans to show their support and visit one of our stalls today, donate to the White Ribbon Foundation and take an oath to stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women,” Acting Deputy Chief Police Officer Wilson said.
The Men in Uniform stalls will be located at the five major shopping centres across Canberra including Westfield Woden and Belconnen, Tuggeranong Hyperdome, Canberra Centre and Gungahlin Marketplace, the three Bunnings’ stores in Belconnen, Fyshwick and Tuggeranong and the Dickson Shops. Stalls will be staffed from 10am to 2pm.
The public will be able to purchase white ribbon merchandise from the members in uniform to wear on White Ribbon Day (25 November) as a visible sign that they do not support or condone violence against women.
Last year’s Men in Uniform campaign set a new record, raising more than $43,000 for the cause.
