In November 2014 a Development Application was submitted to redevelop The Marketplace at Gungahlin. The redevelopment will involve expanding the existing Centre anchored by Woolworths onto the adjacent on grade carpark. The expanded Centre will include a new major tenant (to be announced at a later date) and additional specialty stores significantly improving the retail offer in the Town Centre.
The new section of the Centre will have an additional entrance onto Hibberson Street to ensure the internal retail is well connected to Hibberson Street. To improve the access into the centre anchored by Big W a new entrance will also be created on Hibberson Street next to OPSM; this will make shopping between the new major tenant, Woolworths and Big W even easier.
The expanded Centre will be serviced by 2 levels of basement carparking accommodating over 500 cars conveniently connected to the centre by travelators and lifts. This will mean that customers will be able to shop at the Centre and be protected from inclement weather conditions. This new carpark will also be connected to the Big W’s Centres carpark via a tunnel underneath Hibberson Street, so customers will be able to travel freely between the carparks without the need to exit and re-enter.
The redevelopment will benefit the region with an increased retail offer for customers as well as creating employment during construction and with the additional stores.
The construction timeline is dependent on the DA approval process and this will be announced at a later date.
Although the DA lodged does show an upstairs development in the new building this is not proposed in this current DA and is only there for information purposes only. This is purely a proposed masterplan of what could happen in the future.
