The final weeks of light rail testing is progressing well. Prior to passenger services commencing, Canberra Metro will undertake a number of simulated operational exercises to test and refine emergency systems and procedures for the light rail. These operational exercises are part of the light rail testing and commissioning regime that is designed to prove the system’s safety and operational performance.
On Tuesday 26th March, Canberra Metro will undertake two operational exercises that involve the simulated recovery of a light rail vehicle from a light rail stop back to the Canberra Metro Depot at Mitchell. The first exercise will occur on Tuesday morning and involve a light rail vehicle being recovered from Gungahlin terminus using another light rail vehicle. The first LRV will be towed by the second LRV back to the Depot.
The second exercise will be quite similar except that it will involve a light rail vehicle being recovered from the EPIC stop by a special purpose vehicle called a Unimog. This exercise will happen Tuesday afternoon, and the Unimog will tow the LRV back to the light rail Depot similar to the first test.
The ACT Government and Canberra Metro are committed to delivering light rail in Canberra that is of the highest safety standard. These two exercises, which will be conducted on the same day, are designed to test Canberra Metro’s procedures in the event that a light rail vehicle needs to be recovered from the light rail alignment and assisted back to the Depot.
During the simulated exercises traffic controls and diversions will be in place to manage the safety of the public and personnel involved in the exercise. The community are encouraged to avoid Flemington Road on Tuesday 26th March and must stay outside the red and yellow water barriers and not attempt to enter the light rail corridor at any time.
