On Tuesday 26th March Minister for Sports and Recreation Yvette Berry along with school captains Hamish and Amelia from Holy Spirit Primary School with their Assistant Principal Anna D’Amico and Sienna and Max from Gold Creek School with their Principal Angela Spence, officially opened Nicholls neighbourhood oval for use by the community. In the 2018-19 budget the ACT Government committed $1.6 million to make sure sport continues in all-weather with new synthetic turf set to replace the oval’s existing ageing surface.
The $1.6 million upgrade includes two new synthetic playing surfaces and reconfigured line markings to accommodate a greater range of sport.
The existing 300 metre running track has also been replaced along with a rubber underlay—or ‘shock pad’—to help lessen impact on joints and provide better support for users.
Neighbourhood ovals provide important community hubs, help encourage families to stay active and provide a place for young Canberrans to grow from grassroots to elite sporting if that’s their dreams.
Nicholls oval is well used by the community and local schools—including Gold Creek School and Holy Spirit Primary—for a range of sports including competition and social soccer, touch football, Oztag, Ultimate Frisbee, athletics and training for other sports.
Nicholls oval has a lot of activity to keep up with all year round. This upgrade will ensure the oval continues to meet the current and future sporting demand for the Gungahlin community.
