The weather is getting colder, which means it’s almost time for Canberra pooches (and their parents) to gather en masse.
The RSPCA Million Paws Walk attracts thousands to the shores of Lake Burley Griffin every year, but this time around, they’ll be there to say farewell.
Don’t fret, dog lovers, because it won’t be goodbye forever.
While RSPCA might be hanging up the leash nationally on the Million Paws Walk after 2025, our local branch is ready to fill the gap with something even better.
As for this year’s pooch paw-ty… CEO Michelle Robertson says RSPCA ACT has planned a send-off to remember.
Walkers and their furry loved ones will be spoiled for choice by dozens of pet-friendly stalls to browse, as well as food trucks, coffee vans, fun prizes and roving entertainers.
There’s live music on the cards too, so if your pup loves to dance, they’re in for a treat.
“We’re so lucky in Canberra to have such a tight-knit community of people who love and care for animals, that comes together every year like this,” Michelle says.
“I love seeing all the different shapes, sizes and personalities of dogs in the crowd.
“We’re walking towards a common goal of seeing all animals treated with the respect and kindness they deserve. So even if you don’t have a dog of your own, you’re more than welcome to join us!”
Participants and visitors can attend just for the walk, which starts at 11 am, or drop in any time between 9 am and 2 pm.
There’s no time limit or expectation to stay the whole day, but Michelle does want to remind walkers that only dogs are allowed.

On a more serious note, Michelle reports a sharp increase in surrenders of unplanned litters and pregnant or nursing dogs and cats. She says every pet owner should make sure their animals are desexed to avoid accidental pregnancy.
“We have taken in more than 250 puppies already this year, and it’s only May,” she says.
“Pregnant mums and unwanted litters often come to us in poor condition. Getting them the veterinary care they need is always our top priority, and this is what much of the money we raise goes towards.
“This is much more than just a fun day out. It’s a chance to raise critical funds so we can keep serving the community.”
The RSPCA ACT team is sad to see the annual Million Paws Walk go, but Michelle says it’s also an opportunity to plan a new, Canberra-centric event.
“It’s certainly a shame to lose this tradition after so many wonderful years,” she says.
“But the fundraising landscape has changed, so the walk just can’t run effectively on a national scale.
“I will say not to worry, because we have big plans for the future. Canberra dog lovers will be gathering together and fighting against animal cruelty for many years to come.”
The final RSPCA ACT Million Paws Walk will be held at Patrick White Lawns, in Parkes, on Sunday, 25 May. Registration opens at 9 am and the walk starts at 11 am.
Tickets are currently 40 per cent off, but only for a limited time, so be sure to secure your spot at RSPCA ACT.
