Canberrans with old or unwanted televisions and computers are invited to come along to a free e-waste collection event in Fyshwick on Saturday 12 April 2014, David Roberts, Acting Director, ACT NOWaste, said today.
“To help make it easier for Canberrans and people from surrounding regions to dispose of their televisions, computers and computer products such as printers, keyboards, mice and hard drives, TechCollect, a nationwide not-for-profit recycling service, will provide a temporary drop off site in Fyshwick on Saturday 12 April,” Mr Roberts said.
“Between 9 am and 4 pm, residents can visit the collection site at Toll Express Depot, Unit 1, 23 Mildura Street, Fyshwick.
“E-waste from the event will be transported by TechCollect to one of its partner recyclers for dismantling. The products will then be separated into the various streams of materials, including glass, metal and plastic. Recovered parts can later be used to create new items and products. “The ACT was the first jurisdiction to implement the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme and weekend collection events like these are important to allow the community to fully embrace the scheme.
“Not only has the scheme boosted recycling rates for televisions and computers and provided a long-term solution to deal with e-waste, but it has also helped alleviate some of the ongoing illegal dumping issues in the ACT. The scheme has become even more important as residents upgrade from analog to digital televisions and replace older computers for the latest technology.
“It is great to see the community’s commitment to disposing of their e-waste the right way, especially as e-waste products make up an increasing part of the overall waste stream, contain valuable materials that can be re-used and contain hazardous materials which need to be safely managed.”
Mr Roberts reminded the public they can recycle their e-waste at the permanent drop off sites at the Mugga Lane and Mitchell Transfer Stations that are open from 7.30 am to 5 pm seven days a week.
The scheme does not cover other electronic waste such as mobile phones, which are already covered by the voluntary scheme MobileMuster, or DVD players and video recorders.
