Today Chief Minister Andrew Barr joined Minister for Sport and Recreation, Shane Rattenbury, to officially open the new Franklin Recreation Park.
Chief Minister Barr said “It is almost 10 years since the first sod was turned on the suburb of Franklin, signalling the transformation of former farmland into a quality residential development with outstanding community facilities.
“The new Franklin Recreation Park is a fantastic piece of community land that will provide residents of Canberra’s North with another opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of leisure and recreational activities with family and friends.
“The 1.5 ha site includes irrigated turf areas, a cricket net, a learn to skate bowl, sheltered picnic and BBQ areas, ping pong tables, outdoor fitness equipment, a playground, a multi sport area and toilet facilities. It’s a great local facility and a fantastic addition to an area that’s grown into a wonderful, welcoming and well-serviced community.”
“Facilities such as this help us to improve the health and wellbeing of the Canberra community,” said Shane Rattenbury, the Minister for Sport and Recreation.
“By finding new and innovative ways to get people outdoors, I hope we will inspire our younger generation to engage in regular physical activities and help them to develop healthy lifestyles, and support older Canberrans to get outside with safe, quality recreation spaces.
“This park is also a great example of agencies across government working together to achieve a wonderful outcome for the community. I thank the teams from Sport and Recreation Services, Territory and Municipal Services and the Land Development Agency for working so closely together to develop this great facility,” Said Mr Rattenbury.
