UPDATE 11 am: The Mitchell Resource Centre has reopened after firefighters extinguished a rubbish fire at the site.
Smoke from the fire was no longer a hazard for the community, and those in the immediate area could resume their usual outdoor activities.
Fire and Rescue crews would remain on scene to monitor the area.
Thursday 10 am: Mitchell residents have been urged to stay indoors and close all windows as firefighters work to bring a rubbish fire on Flemington Road under control.
Emergency services were first alerted to a fire at the Mitchell recycling centre at about 8:40 this morning (1 September).
The fire was producing large amounts of black smoke, and the community has been asked to avoid the area.
ACT Fire and Rescue crews were working to make sure the fire was fully extinguished, which was expected to take a few hours.
It’s understood the material involved was mainly scrap metal.
Five pumpers were on scene, including HAZMAT and breathing apparatus teams.
