ACT Policing is reminding motorists there’s no such thing as safe speeding, and that double demerit point periods will be in place on successive weekends for Easter and Anzac Day.
In total there will be 10 days in an 11-day period where the higher penalties apply. The Easter double demerit period will run from Thursday 18 April to Monday 22 April inclusive followed by the Anzac Day period from Wednesday 24 April until Sunday 28 April inclusive.
During both periods all speeding, seatbelt, and mobile phone offences attract double demerit points, as does riding without a helmet. All other traffic offences will incur one additional demerit point.
ACT Policing Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Acting Station Sergeant David Wills said due to the school holidays, Easter and Anzac Day, he expected roads would be busy.
“While these holidays present a great opportunity to get away, there’s no getting away from the importance of road safety,” Acting Station Sergeant Wills said.
“Before you leave home make sure your vehicle is registered and roadworthy. Take regular breaks and allow extra to time to get to your destination, because there will be more traffic on our roads than usual.”
“If you think driving a few kilometres an hour over the limit is OK, you’re wrong. It greatly increases your chances of having a collision, and makes a collision worse if you have one.”
