There has always been a great love for Australian bird life, ever since some sketches were thrown together as Captain Cook sailed around Australia. One unfortunate lorikeet even made the long journey home with the captain. Australia is even known to some as the “land of the parrots”, as we host 56 of the worlds 30,000 species. In total, there are over 800 different species of birds in Australia, many of which have legged it from other parts of the world.
As any avid bird watcher will tell you actually seeing and interacting with these birds can be nigh impossible. Thankfully Canberrans have a one stop shop for all things bird related – the Canberra Walk-in Aviary. The aviary currently hosts 500 birds, representing over 60 different species from Australia and around the world.
It is currently run by Mick Logan, a self confessed bird enthusiast. He not only maintains the local population of parrots, finches, doves and quail but also raises baby birds to join the enclosure or for other bird enthusiasts. The birds get a lot of love and they in turn are happy, friendly little things that will happily land on your shoulder to feast on some fruit or mealworms. Sadly no birds of prey are kept in the enclosure as they would eat all the other inhabitants.
The business has also just expanded into mini-golf and you can be one of the first to try it out.
Entrance into the aviary includes fruit and mealworms to feed the birds. Kids under 4 are free.
