From MLA Yvette Berry: “Today I visited Amaroo School to turn the first sod of the new Amaroo School expansion. This $13.16 million project combines the construction of new learning areas for 300 extra students as well as the extension of existing infrastructure and the building of brand new hard court facilities.
In our recent 2017/18 budget, the government recognised the need for investment in our Gungahlin public schools. Public school enrolments in the Gungahlin region have grown by about 53% over the last five years.
Canberra public schools are a popular school choice, especially in the Gungahlin area. We want to ensure that we continue to have the facilities to provide a space for every child to attend a Canberra public school in their local area, now and in the future.
The construction works will include a new building and amenities to increase capacity by 300 students, landscaping, expansion of the existing gymnasium, and new outdoor hard courts will be built to replace those that are making way for the other expansions.
The new facilities will not only benefit students at Amaroo School, but the wider Gungahlin community with local sports and community groups able to use the expanded gymnasium and outdoor hard courts after hours, reinforcing that our schools are not just for use in school hours, but also to be centres of our local communities.
Construction is expected be completed by the beginning of 2018. Students and the public will utilise the new expanded facilities from the start of the 2018 school year.”
