ACT Policing’s ‘Men in Uniform’ campaign involving the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) has set a new record with $43,482 raised for the White Ribbon Foundation on Saturday (22 November).
White Ribbon Day Ambassador and Chief Police Officer for the ACT Rudi Lammers, who attended 13 stalls throughout the day, praised the community’s generosity and the dedication of all forces in attendance.
“The benchmark was set extremely high at $30,000 raised last year, but we stepped up to the challenge setting a new record of $43,482 in 2014,” Assistant Commissioner Lammers said.
“The show of support by the community, our police officers, and those of the Australian Defence Force and Emergency Services Agency was outstanding and I thank them for their commitment.
The Canberra Centre claimed the winning stall raising more than $7,700, while Bunnings Belconnen had the most amount of oaths on the day (216).
ACT Policing would like to thank the five major shopping centres across Canberra including Westfield Woden and Belconnen, Tuggeranong Hyperdome, Canberra Centre and Gungahlin Marketplace, along with the three Bunnings stores in Belconnen, Fyshwick and Tuggeranong, and the Dickson shops for again supporting the Men in Uniform stalls.
“We also received 1,124 oaths across the stalls – affirmations from the public who have sworn never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.
“While it’s encouraging to see that reports of family violence incidents to police have increased in the 2013-14 financial year, we want to encourage more people to pick up the phone and call police if they know someone who might be suffering family violence.”
“Every week, one woman in Australia is killed by a current or former intimate partner. To any woman who has experienced violence at the hands of a man and who has been unable to come forward because you feel that you may be doubted, I say – ‘I believe you – and so will my officers’.”
