ACT Policing has arrested a 27-year-old Belconnen man following the theft of a silver Mazda yesterday (Thursday 20 February) that had a 7-month old baby boy inside.

About 2pm, police received a report that a silver 1999 Mazda 323 Protégé had been stolen from Yarrawonga Street, Ngunnawal. A woman, the driver of the Mazda, had gone to the assistance of a man whose car had broken down. The man then jumped into the woman’s car and took off, with her 7-month-old baby boy inside.

About 3.45pm, a member of the public located the silver Mazda, which had sustained damage, in the driveway of their residence in Palmerston when they returned home and reported it to police immediately.

The baby was located safe and well on the porch of the residence and reunited with his parents a short time later.

ACT Policing continued to search for the male offender.

Around 6.55pm police attended the Jamison Shops after reports that a man had entered the Jamison Pharmacy threatening staff with a knife demanding cash and drugs.

Staff complied with the man’s demands and he left the store with a sum of cash and drugs.

Around 8.25pm police were notified of a suspicious vehicle (white coloured Mazda) in the Weetangera area. After a brief pursuit police stopped the vehicle in Mayo Street, Weetangera where they located the male offender in the driver’s seat.

The male offender was later identified as the same person that had stolen the silver 1999 Mazda 323 Protégé earlier in the day.

He was taken to the ACT Watch House and will face the ACT Magistrate’s Court today. Police will oppose bail.
