The Parkes Way widening project is now complete, providing a third lane between Glenloch Interchange and Edinburgh Avenue, Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, announced today.
“I’m pleased to announce that traffic travelling in both directions on Parkes Way can now make use of an additional lane,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“In addition to these works, the upgrade has seen improvements to the Parkes Way on-ramp to Commonwealth Avenue by increasing the length of the merging lane with London Circuit southbound traffic, as well as the relocation of street lighting from the median strip to the verge.
“Works were delayed from the original completion date due to the original bridge subcontractor going into liquidation in 2012 as well as unexpected record rainfall in September 2013. I’d like to thank the community for their patience while work on this important transport infrastructure project has been underway.”
Mr Rattenbury said Parkes Way currently carries over 35,000 vehicles and the new lanes would help accommodate this traffic and other traffic from the new residential development in the Molonglo Valley and Gungahlin.
“Work on the third lane of the eastbound carriageway was completed in October 2013 and the opening of the third lane of the westbound carriageway marks the completion of the $16.3 million project to widen Parkes Way.
“This project was part of the implementation of the Government’s ‘Transport for Canberra’ strategy, which seeks to improve transport infrastructure and reduce traffic congestion on the roads,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.
